Atlantic City Airshow “Thunder Over The Boardwalk” will take to the sky on Friday, August 17, 2012 – New Acts, sponsors and exhibits help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Airshows in Atlantic City

The Atlantic City Airshow “Thunder Over The Boardwalk” presented by Siganos Management returns to Atlantic City on Friday, August 17, 2012.  Greater Atlantic City Chamber President Joseph Kelly made the announcement. 

“I’m pleased to announce the Atlantic City Airshow is returning to the beach and Boardwalk in 2012,” said Kelly. “This year, in the spirit of a true community event, Siganos Management will be the Presenting Sponsor and Harrah’s Entertainment will be the Host Hotel Sponsor for the airshow.”

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights will both return to headline the 2012 airshow. This year also marks the first appearance by the Brazilian Esquadrilha da Fumaca or “Smoke Squadron”. The Brazilian Smoke Squadron will appear at only two shows this airshow season: Atlantic City and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Additional acts have been added to the airshow including a U.S. Marine Harrier Jet demonstration and a US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet demonstration.

It’s also the 100th anniversary of the first airshow to take place in New Jersey, held in 1910 in both Atlantic City and Asbury Park. To pay tribute, the Atlantic City Free Public Library and Asbury Park Public Library will offer a new exhibit – Flying Fearless: Celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of Airshows in New Jersey – at the Atlantic City Historical Museum on Garden Pier, the Atlantic City International Airport and Township of Ocean Historical Museum in Ocean Township, Monmouth County. Harrah’s Entertainment will act as the official host hotel sponsor for the airshow. The resort will host both military and civilian pilots, including the US Air Force Thunderbirds.

The Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) will continue to serve as the host airport for the 2012 Atlantic City Airshow. Each year, the majority of airshow performers take off and land via ACY even though the actual airshow takes place over the beach and Boardwalk in Atlantic City.

The new HBO series that is on Sunday Nights at 9:00pm is one of the years most anticipated television events.  Martin Scorcese is one of the executive producers and directed the pilot. The series revolves around the wild world of “Nucky” Thompson, a corrupt politician and booze smuggler in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the roaring 20′s and the era of prohibition.  The story is based on the acclaimed non-fiction book by Nelly Johnson. The project was pitched to Terence Winter by producers Steve Levinson and Mark Wahlberg who are well known to HBO from their work with the hit series Entourage.

Did you catch the premiere of “Boardwalk Empire” Sunday Night?

It repeats at 9 on HBO and at 11 p.m throughout the week.  Keep in mind: It’s a 75-minute running time.

The epic gangster drama dwarfs the 23 series joining the broadcast schedule this fall. What do you expect when Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese directs the pilot?

What we have here is a reason for celebration. And here’s another: Character actor Steve Buscemi seizes the biggest, boldest role of his career as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the treasurer and political kingpin of Atlantic City. Buscemi excels in the part, but this is far from a one-man show.

The other standouts include:

*** Lake Mary’s Shea Whigham as Nucky’s brother Elias, the town sheriff. Whigham deftly conveys the confusion of a man living in his brother’s shadow and uncertain of his own leadership abilities. Check my interview with Whigham.

*** Michael Pitt as Nucky’s rebellious protege Jimmy Darmody. Pitt gives a star-making performance as a man struggling to make his own way.

***Michael Shannon as federal Agent Nelson Van Alden. Van Alden might look as if he stepped from a Dick Tracy cartoon, but he’s quite a complicated fellow. There are a lot of complicated people here.

***Kelly Macdonald as a young mother who grabs Nucky’s attention. Macdonald is crucial because she supplies heart to this violent, panoramic story. Her character, Margaret Schroeder, has it bad in many ways, and that enriches this story.

“Boardwalk Empire” presents the Prohibition era with impressive attention to detail. Series creator Terence Winter, an Emmy-winning writer for “The Sopranos,” tells the new story with confidence and imagination.

I’ve seen the first six episodes. I’m hopeful that “Boardwalk Empire” will earn a spot in the pop-culture pantheon with “The Godfather” and “The Sopranos.”

America loves a good gangster story. “Boardwalk Empire – Atlantic City” is a superlative one.

In 2007 Singer Akon recognized Gaga’s vocal talent, and signed her to his label Kon Live Distribution. She immediately started to work on her debut album. In 2008 she released her first album “The Fame” which was geared towards thought that ‘anyone can feel famous’. Her first single Just Dance (nominated for a Grammy) was a huge success and 3 more songs have hit the charts including Poker Face, Papparazzi, Bad Romance & Telephone.

Lady Gaga was influenced by Glam Rockers – David Bowie and Queen, along with Madonna and RIP Michael Jackson. It has two faces. Driving in to the Casino areas along the beach can be depressing at the sight of poorly kept homes.  There is some poverty in Atlantic City, NJ as is in most cities, but it just seems so glaring when a stone’s throw away is the glitter an opulence of the Casino life.

I am a cowardly gambler so most of my enjoyment stemmed from shows, Pawn Shops (yes pawn shops where my wife shopped), Convention center: hosting Automobile, Dolls, Antiques and Gun Shows, to mention a few. 

The Atlantic City Boardwalk is a genuine pleasure where you can buy Fudge, back massages, unique foods and get transported in a man powered wagon from one end to the other.  At the end of the Boardwalk is a moderately sophisticated amusement park at the Steel Peer.

A lot of the Atlantic City Casinos enter right off the Boardwalk.  Trump Plaza is about a mile south. When you play a lot, you can ask the dealers for comps.  They are for food, shows and rooms.  Our lady friend, well into her 70’s and a crafty player, seldom had to spend her own money.  They all knew her ans showered her with comps.

Atlantic City courts the elderly patrons, and others, strongly.  From north NJ, you could get a Casino bus for $15.00 (in 2000), get $10.00 in quarters and food certificates.

Get up early and watch the sun rise over the Ocean.  Be aware that you do not venture into poorly lighted areas and best to be with several others.  I rented at the Sands and played at another casino until midnight.  When I started to walk home, I was advised against it and ended up staying with friends at the other casino.

In closing, with much more to say, I would like to comment on one of my personal observations.  When standing in a casino, you are in the presence of as close to perfection in a business as you will ever see.  With many millions of dollars a day being handled there, I’ll bet not one penny gets “misplaced”. I wish our Government could handle money like a casino.
